PlayMakers announces casting for ‘Sweeney Todd’

Broadway’s David St. Louis & Annie Golden to head Sondheim musical

(Chapel Hill, N.C.—March 4, 2016) PlayMakers Repertory Company announces casting of the lead roles for its upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” to be presented March 30-April 23.

David St. Louis will play bloodthirsty barber Sweeney Todd. He has appeared on Broadway in “Side Show,” “Harlem Song,” “Rent,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” He also performs in film, on television and at regional theaters across the United States, having been honored with an Ovation Award for the musical “Parade” at Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum and the Helen Hayes Award for his performance in “Bessie’s Blues” at Washington DC’s Studio Theatre.

Annie Golden, featured in Broadway hits such as “Violet,” “On the Town,” “The Full Monty” and “Ah! Wilderness” will be his amorous accomplice, Mrs. Lovett. She originated the role of Squeaky Fromme in the world premiere of Sondheim’s “Assassins” at Playwrights Horizons. Golden currently appears as Norma Romano in hit Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Along with an acting company featuring many of the same cast members in PlayMakers’ hit 2014 production of “Into the Woods,” resident company favorites, such as Ray Dooley appearing as Judge Turpin, and “Peter and the Starcatcher”’s Brian Owen returning as Pirelli, the theater promises audiences a “bloody great musical” to cap its 2015/16 Mainstage Season.

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is a musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by Hugh Wheeler, from an adaptation by Christopher Bond. The multiple Tony Award-winning musical was originally directed on Broadway by Harold Prince with orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick.

Performances will take place in the Paul Green Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Show times will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays and on Saturday, April 9.
