PlayMakers Repertory Company, the professional theater in residence at UNC, will present Mac in “The Young Ladies of …” as part of its thought-provoking PRC2 second-stage series. Mac, whose father died when he was young, performs in drag, singing and playing a ukulele in the audacious yet touching tale.
In its November cover story, American Theatre magazine called Mac “one of this country’s most exciting, heroic and disarmingly funny playwrights.” In 2007, he was named one of New York’s best performers by the Village Voice, Time Out New York and the New York Press.
The Press said, “Taylor Mac’s deeply inspiring ‘The Young Ladies Of…’ is a beautiful play. (He is) one of the best performers the city has to offer.”
The Chicago Tribune called him “a serious talent” in “this smart and sophisticated show … embodying our endless need to know ourselves and our place in the firmament.”
Others also hailed the show: “Taylor Mac seduces you, breaks your heart, puts it back together again and stitches sequins along the scar” (The Irish Times) and “Mac attacks the familiar with such brash originality that the show dazzles” (The New York Times).
All PRC² performances are followed by artist-audience discussions. Shows will be at 8 p.m. nightly and 2 p.m. on Jan. 11 in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road. Tickets are $24 to $32, available at www.playmakersrep.org or (919) 962-PLAY (7529).
Based in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, PlayMakers is the Carolinas’ premiere resident professional theatre. The Drama League of New York has named PlayMakers one of the best regional theatres in America.
Rounding out the current PRC2 series will be Heather Raffo’s “9 Parts of Desire” (April 22-26, 2009). Visit www.playmakersrep.org for information and tickets to PRC2, as well as PlayMakers’ main stage season.
