About Spring Awakening
In today’s time, teenagers face more pressure than ever to succeed, to be beautiful, to show their best self to the world through social media even if they are suffering inside. Spring Awakening shows a time untainted by social media but doomed by secrecy, strict discipline, and lack of knowledge and support. On one side of growing up, there is friendship, freedom, revelation of self, love, stirring emotions, hope for your own future and on the other side . . . the tumult of societal expectations and the internal struggle of not understanding the changes in your own body.
“The tension between these two realities pops with electricity in the highly expressive folk-rock music and reveals the inner experience of being a teenager. And who better to explore this story of the trials and tribulations of these lost and longing teenagers than teenagers themselves?”
-Tracey Bersley, Director
Spring Awakening is the culmination of PlayMakers’ Summer Youth Conservatory, a six-week practicum for high school students—both on stage and behind the scenes—combining top-notch teaching with unparalleled practical experience. Students work with professional directors, choreographers, musical directors, and theatre technicians to mount a professional quality production for all to enjoy.
