Resident company member Kathryn Hunter-Williams steps into the role of Sandra, a modern-day political science professor battling systemic barriers in academia. A force of intellect and determination, Sandra’s story mirrors historical struggles in unexpected ways. Kathryn delivers a performance brimming with depth, wit, and emotional nuance.

Resident company member and Department of Dramatic Art’s Professional Actor Training Program (PATP) student Mengwe Wapimewah plays Sara, an enslaved woman with a sharp mind and an unbreakable will. Sara’s story is one of survival and strategy as she navigates the harsh realities of the Civil War era. Mengwe’s commanding presence on stage brings a layered complexity to this remarkable character, capturing her resilience and intelligence with every moment.

Resident company member Tia James brings her remarkable talent to the roles of LuAnne, a plantation mistress with complex motives, and Jade, Sandra’s sharp-tongued, no-nonsense colleague. Tia is no stranger to commanding the stage, with previous PlayMakers credits including Hamlet and Clyde’s. Her ability to bring humor, tension, and nuance to both roles makes her performances unforgettable.

Kristofer Wilson makes his PlayMakers debut as Abner, Sara’s loving brother, a runaway slave and soldier for the Union, and Malik, a present-day college student in Sandra’s class who tries to carefully navigate her status over his. Kristofer seamlessly shifts between eras, embodying two men grappling with their respective times’ constraints.

Resident company member and Department of Dramatic Art’s Professional Actor Training Program (PATP) student Elizabeth Dye plays the dual roles of Missy Sue, a young spirited woman who is the daughter of Sara’s enslaver and her former childhood friend, and Candice, a privileged academic who challenges Sandra in the modern storyline. Elizabeth’s sincere interpretation of these characters emphasizes ironic moments that are sure to make you laugh.
